March 2024 | Challenges and Solutions for Safe Management of Spent Nuclear Fuel, Dr. Robert L. Sindelar, Savannah River National Laboratory

by James Deaton | Mar 13, 2024

Speaker: Dr. Robert L. Sindelar, Savannah River National Laboratory

Presentation: "Challenges and Solutions for Safe Management of Spent Nuclear Fuel"

Venue: Newberry Hall, 117 Newberry Street, SW in downtown Aiken, SC 29801

Time/Date: 6:00 PM, Tuesday, March 19, 2024

Abstract:

The aim for storage of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) either in wet or dry storage systems is to ensure general safety objectives are met throughout a desired storage period. Staff at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL, in collaboration with partners at other national laboratories, industry research organizations, and the University of South Carolina, have performed materials aging testing and analyses, and have established nuclear materials aging management programs to support extended periods of safe storage of SNF. Examples of challenges to extended safe storage are from corrosion, hydrogen radiolysis, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking. This presentation describes several challenges and the formulated solutions to support extended safe storage of SNF.

Menu: Buffet featuring Homestyle Pot Roast, Grilled Chicken Newberry, Herbed Orzo Pasta, Fresh Seasoned Vegetable, Mixed Greens Salad with house-made dressing, Iced Tea and Water, Coffee Station, and Peach Cobbler for dessert. No-host bar is available.
